Denver scowled over to the woman sitting in the passenger side of his truck and gave her the stink eye. They had just arrived at the grocery store, and Pru had said something before they got out. He wanted, no, he needed to clear the air before they went any further.

“No.”

“Excuse me?”

“You just asked me out, correct?”

“Well, yeah.”

“I’m sorry, I know my friends probably said some things I might have done in the past, but they are lies. I don’t sleep around, I don’t play the field. When I’m with a woman, I want to be with them for longer than a quick fuck. I’m sorry if that sounds harsh, but that’s the type of guy I am. Please, don’t take any offense to what I’m about to say, Pru, but you’re not my type.”

“Okay, who is your type?” Pru wasn’t offended at all about his refusal from her hitting on him.

“Opal,” Denver said with such finality, he opened his door and got out. Because his parents had raised him right, he went over and opened the door for her. To quickly change the subject, he looked at her with a grin. “Did you remember your list?”

She grinned back at him and tapped her temple. “Right here.”

Denver smirked and nodded. “Got it.” They walked to the store, both grabbing their own cart. By the time they were out of the produce section, Denver took pity on her and handed her the list that Opal had given him earlier. It had only taken a few minutes to know that what Opal said about Pru’s memory was true, it sucked.

“Thank you,” she said with dignity, and nothing was said after that. They had spent at least thirty minutes in that first section alone, but once Pru had her list, they breezed through the store. Not only did they get everything they needed, but Pru was able to remember about the carrots and apples. She even sought out an employee and said they were from Erin’s Way, and was told to tell the cashier when they were to check out.

With the help of the employee, Denver put all of their purchases in the back of his truck, then the cases of apples and carrots for the farm.

In the truck, he looked at Pru, “Would you like to stop and get something to eat?”

“How about the drive through?” She named the fast-food chain, and he agreed. Thirty minutes later, they were on the road toward home, both eating the meal they’d purchased. He didn’t know if it was Pru herself, or because of what he’d said after she’d asked him out on a date, but she’d refused to allow him to pay for her meal. No matter what he’d said. Oh, he’d paid, but she’d put her money in the cup holder and when he gave her a look, she only shrugged.

When they reached the farm, the first thing they did was go to the barn, and Pru directed him as to where to park so they could take the apples and carrots inside.
